A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE ISLAND OF CORFU
For centuries Corfu’s magnetic beauty has attracted travellers from all around the world. The island is in the northwest corner of Greece and is considered to be one of the most interesting and beautiful islands.
Over the centuries Corfu has passed through many European conquerors yet had never been ruled by the Turks. Corfu passed through Venetian, French, Russian and British hands before becoming part of Greece in 1864. Each nation added something to beautify the islands capital giving it the unique cosmopolitan atmosphere it has today.

While reaching the island by boat you will come across the old fortress that was built to protect the Town of Corfu from invaders. Apart from the old fortress you will also be able to visit the new fortress when you arrive at the island. The new fortress was built a few years after the new one.

The walk through the old Town is very rewarding. The most popular to tourists is the Liston that is set in the Splianada Square one of the most attractive squares in all Greece. Visitors will also enjoy walking through the narrow stone-paved streets with houses built aside them.

In a 16th century church in the Town of Corfu you will be able to see the Patron Saint of the island called Spiridon who over the years has been accredited with many miracles.
The more remote countryside of Corfu contrasts with the cosmopolitan type of the city. In the north of the island you will be seduced by the luxurious beauty of the countryside. There are small handsome villages in unspoiled from tourism areas and there are lively resorts that although tourism has nibbled into them they have still kept their rustic charm. You will marvel at the breathtaking view of the turquoise sea and the mountains of Albania, a long line of peaks that trail of into the horizon. There are also off shore islands that reappear as you descend down the mountains. Corfu especially in the North offers here visitors the most beautiful beaches for swimming.
